Future tech leaders emerge: Filipinos triumph at Huawei competition

Two Filipino teams emerged victorious at the 8th Huawei ICT Competition Asia-Pacific 2023-2024, held at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The award ceremony, co-hosted by Huawei and the ASEAN Foundation, celebrated excellence in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

The Philippines dominated two of the four competition tracks. Cebu Institute of Technology – University (CIT-U) secured the grand prize in the Innovation Track. Their project, “WEI Care,” utilizes Huawei smartwatch technology to monitor for heart attacks. The winning team comprised Thomas Danjo Manulat, Adrian Sajulga, Tristan James Tolentino, and Dr. Eugene Busico.

Meanwhile, iACADEMY’s team, consisting of Ryan Caezar Itang, Nicholas Barilea, Justine Benedict Umali, and Instructor Jayson Viernes, bagged the regional championship title in the Computing Track. They were represented at the ceremony by SOC Dean Francisco Napalit.

These victories grant both Filipino teams the opportunity to compete at the Global Finals of the Huawei ICT Competition in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for May this year.

The competition, attracting over 15,000 college students, serves as a platform for showcasing ICT skills and developing solutions relevant to global challenges.

Huawei, committed to empowering the digital talent pool among youth, aims to establish 500 ICT Academies by 2025, fostering the development of over 200,000 students.
