DepEd, DICT adopt program on ways to make money online

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will collaborate with internet-based digital media company Republic Asia and IT-focused school iAcademy on a program that will teach school children how to “monetize” or earn from social media platforms as content creators and social media managers or virtual assistants.
Under the “Pay IT Forward: A Digital Transformation Advocacy” campaign, the DepEd and DICT will tap the expertise of Republic Asia to promote digital transformation by spreading awareness on the livelihood available in cyber space.
DICT Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda, DepEd assistant secretary Aurelio Paulo Bartolome, Reluao, and iAcademy president Raquel Wong, signed yesterday a partnership agreement for the project at the Republic Asia offices in the ECJ Building in Intramuros, Manila.
“Today, we come together under a shared vision – to make digital learning more accessible for all. The government has made significant strides toward this goal. In our own little way, we wish to contribute to this cause through Republic Asia’s ‘Pay IT Forward’ initiative,” said Republic Asia founder and CEO Bran Reluao.
He emphasized the importance of the initiative in making digital education accessible to everyone, noting that this partnership is part of Republic Asia’s broader goal of empowering communities to embrace digital transformation.
“Education is the great equalizer. As a digital inclusivity advocate, I personally believe that technology can be a powerful equalizer, too – if we give every learner a fair chance at success. One learner, one school at a time,” Reluao said.
Republic Asia has developed the “Pay IT Forward” initiative in partnership with iAcademy to complement government efforts aimed at digital transformation. The program supports the DICT’s Free WiFi for All initiative and DepEd’s blended learning programs.
As part of their commitment, Republic Asia will distribute 100 tablets and three Starlink devices to three public schools in Cebu.
In addition, iAcademy will conduct training sessions to help teachers make the most of the technology.
“At iAcademy, we have always believed that technology and education are powerful allies in unlocking the full potential of students. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, access to technology is no longer a privilege. It is a necessity. That is why we are proud to stand alongside Republic Asia, DICT and DepEd in our shared commitment to bridging the digital divide through the Pay It Forward initiative,” iAcademy president Raquel Wong said.
“This project is more than just a donation of connectivity and tablets to schools and students. It is an investment in their future, empowering them with the tools they need to navigate, create, and thrive in an increasingly digital world. These devices are not just pieces of technology. They are keys to opportunity, enabling young minds to develop confidence, creativity, and capability in the digital age.”
