From independent filmmaking to representing the Philippines on the international stage, award-winning filmmaker Carl Joseph Papa brought his experience and creative perspective to iACADEMY’s Future Filmmakers Forum, held as part of Academics Week 2026.
Papa, the director and writer of Iti Mapukpukaw, and 58th, has represented the Philippines in the Academy Awards selection process, with Iti Mapukpukaw serving as the country’s official entry for the 2024 Oscars. His latest film, 58th, is also being considered as this year’s Philippine entry.
During the forum, Papa encouraged aspiring filmmakers to stop waiting for the perfect moment to begin creating and instead learn through actual experience.
“The only way you’ll know if you can do it or not is if you actually do it,” Papa shared, urging students to explore available resources and discover their creative voices while they are still young.
He also emphasized the value of experiencing the realities of the creative industry before graduation. According to Papa, exposure to professionals and actual industry practices can help students better understand what awaits them beyond the classroom.
For Papa, platforms that connect students with working creatives provide a valuable bridge between education and practice. “Explore and find your own voice while you’re still young,” he reminded aspiring filmmakers.
Through the Future Filmmakers Forum, iACADEMY continues to create spaces where students can learn directly from professionals and see where their creative education can take them.
