Why Is Mental Health Help Still Hard to Access?

April 18, 2026

Even as mental health awareness grows, many Filipinos still struggle to get the support they need. According to recent data, there are less than one mental-health worker for every 100,000 Filipinos, a stark shortage given the population of the country.

With a national population of nearly 112.7 million according to a recent census, the Philippines has only a few hundred licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, and mental-health professionals serving the entire country. Many live in urban centers like Metro Manila, leaving remote provinces with little to no access to mental-health services.

Meanwhile, millions of Filipinos are believed to be living with mental health conditions, from anxiety and depression to other disorders, but a large portion remain untreated because care is too expensive or simply unavailable.

This growing gap between need and access underscores the urgent need for more trained professionals, especially those willing to serve underserved communities. Education becomes critical, not only to produce more qualified psychologists, but also to expand mental-health support across provinces and make care more affordable and reachable.

That’s why the Psychology program at iACADEMY is so vital. iACADEMY equips students with science-based knowledge, practical skills, and compassionate values, preparing them to become future mental-health game changers. In a country where millions still lack access, iACADEMY’s mission is to bring care closer to every Filipino, making mental health truly within reach.
